An “Elder” in the Learning Community
I see myself as an elder within several vibrant learning communities. This role fits perfectly at the Mentora Institute, where I coach and teach leaders and talent development professionals. My background includes:
- Speaking: Delivering Vistage presentations to leaders around the world and in other venues.
- Academic Deep Dives: Teaching coaching for 25 years at Columbia University and the Hudson Institute of Coaching, and instructing within Executive MBA programs.
- Flourishing Transitions: For the last 15 years, I’ve facilitated the psychological and imaginative work required for a flourishing retirement.
On Aging with Intention
Our culture tends to favor the “outer game”—physical health and social status. While those matter, I believe the inner game is even more crucial for vitality as we mature. I now focus much of my coaching and training on helping others navigate the journey of aging with intention, exploring the developmental paths available to us as we grow.

The Personal Landscape
My life is anchored by a 40-year marriage to my wife and partner, Patti Kane. Together, we’ve navigated the flux of business partnerships and the complexities of family. I’ve endured the ordeal of being a long-distance father while my two sons were growing up—a challenge we all survived, and one that deeply informed my understanding of resilience.
Today, my two sons are high school teachers in Ohio. I am “Pops” to four grandkids—a social worker, a policeman, and a nurse—and a “wow” to two great-grandchildren.
Spiritually, I am rooted in my Catholic upbringing and Episcopal involvement, enriched by a deepening meditation practice with an Eastern flavor. When I’m not working or reflecting, you’ll find me in the garden, with a guitar in my hands, or on the pickleball court.
